Gardening with children can be a fun and rewarding experience for the entire family. By planting and caring for an organic garden your children will learn about protecting the environment, the ecosystem, and lifecycles.
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?... Pumpkin pi.
Not only is gardening educational it’s a healthy hobby that will inspire your children to eat better and one that will stay with them for a lifetime.
Organic gardening is becoming more and more popular now that we realize the effects pesticides have on our health. Practically every day the news broadcasts another outbreak of e-coli or sites a study of adverse affects on our health due to chemicals in our food.
New study links pesticides to ADHD
Commonly used insecticides on fruits and vegetables such as malathion appears to boost the chances that children will be diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children that have higher-than-average amounts of one pesticide marker were nearly two times as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD as children who showed no traces of the poison.
What is Gardening for Kids? It’s a two step method that teaches your children eco-gardening and worm composting.
Step One: Eco-Gardening
Organic eco-gardening is a method taught by a professional environmental scientist and gardener, Jonathan White. Over the years he has perfected a way of gardening that produces an abundance of food in a very small area. Using his techniques anyone can grow their own fruits and vegetables with very little effort and it only takes about eight hour of your time for the whole year.
By using the proper garden layout and companion planting methods, the eco-garden is a great choice for gardening for kids. Set up the 8x8 layout described in the program and add a tee-pee trellis in the center of the pathway. Your kids will enjoy their new tee-pee fort as the climbing vegetables grow throughout the summer.

Step Two: Worm Composting
Most kids love worm composting. It’s fun and easy to do but even better it provides the best nutrients for your organic eco-garden. In his program, Jonathon White explains how to use everyday yard waste and your kitchen scraps to create the best compost to feed your vegetables.
Worm composting can speed up the process and makes composting more interesting for children. It’s possible to make your own worm compost bins by puncturing holes in the bottom of two 8-10 gallon plastic storage boxes and filling them with shredded newspaper and approximately one pound of redworms. You can find complete instructions on how to build a worm composting bin online.
An easier and cleaner alternative is to purchase the Worm Factory® as seen on Good Morning America.
The Worm Factory® is a composter comprised of stacking trays in which worms eat your scraps and leave behind rich organic material. Fill each tray with scraps like vegetables, fruits, egg shells, coffee grounds, paper, and junk mail, and in turn you'll get nutrient-rich compost for your garden. Worm castings are known to be the very best compost available. Your plants will thrive with this all-natural compost. Worms start in the bottom tray and work upward as they break down the waste. The worms leave behind the stuff, and you don't even have to sort through the wiggly friends at all, as they're already on the next tray up. Plus nutrient-rich moisture is captured in the collection tray and can be used as liquid fertilizer known as "worm tea." Made in the USA from 100% recycled plastic.
